La ciencia y la tecnología han sido claves en el desarrollo económico y productivo de la civilización occidental. Sin embargo, estos avances nos presentan con nuevos desafíos éticos, sociales y ecológicos, que no siempre son fáciles de anticipar. Ejemplo de esto es el cambio climático, la salud mental de las grandes metrópolis, los avances de la genética y la generación masiva de datos personales. En este contexto, este curso explora las potencialidades y desafíos del desarrollo tecnológico en relación a problemas públicos complejos. Para ello el curso cuenta con profesores invitados, con quienes abarcamos particularmente temas relacionados con medio ambiente, infraestructura, datos y nuevas tecnologías (automatización, inteligencia artificial, entre otros).

Science and technology have been crucial for the economic and productive development of Western civilization. However, these has also meant new ethical, social and ecological challenges, and some of them are not always easy to anticipate. An example of this is climate change, large metropolises, advances in genetics and the enormous amount of our personal data that is collected without our knowledge. In this context, this course explores the advantages and challenges of current technological developments, with emphasis in its relationships with complex public problems. For this, the course invites different professors of UC´s School of Engineering to share and discuss their research. Thanks to this collaboration, we are able to cover topics related to the environment, infrastructure, big data and new technologies (automation, artificial intelligence, among others).
